Reading of the Day: Ayako
Ayako starts off
seemingly well until Jiro returns home with a few surprises and disheartening
remarks. The story takes place after World War II when Jiro, a war veteran,
returns home and greets his mother and Naoko. Tezuka hits on the accents from
his family and the people he talks to in the city. One example being is when
his mother appears and she speaks as someone would from the country side. Whereas
Naoko would speak as someone who worked in the city.
After 5 years, he returns home only to be
greeted with shun from his father. After doing some research I learned that the
older generation were taught to die for their country in every literally sense.
The older generation had a mindset that if you came back alive you did not care
for your country and would not be welcomed back home. Overall after learning of
Ayako’s past the sense of good and bad is very clear to the reader however to
the father everything else is seen differently.
