She Is A Slow Walker cover If you are looking for a good Manga I would recommend reading She Is a Slow Walker. However, this manga is not for the faint of heart or those with a weak stomach. She Is a Slow Walker is one of many Junji Ito's horror series. The manga starts off innocently enough until one of the main characters are bitten and slowly turns into...well a zombie. I will try not to spoil the story but the illustrations are impressive and the ending is quite unnerving. Here is a link to a video I found with the full reading.
This week on movie hour we watch: Grave of the Fireflies. After reading "I SAW IT" I stumbled upon a studio ghibli film with a similar topic. The octcome and events may differ but, the similaritiess between the emotional impact is still there. The film was written and directed by Isao Takahata while the film was animated by Studio Ghibli. Junji Ito became one of the world's most prolific horror manga artist. Over the past 30 years, Ito has written over 38 manga titles, with the majority of them being horror. Although he considers himself a scardy-cat, Ito really enjoys ghost stories. In fact one of his stories were actually written about his cat; Cat Diary. I to became fascinated with horror in manga at an early age. During his childhood Ito would read the works of Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga. Other works that highly inspired Ito were Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Exorcist. During the 70’s, occult films began to flourish which further peaked Ito’s interest for horror. To capture the art style, Ito used his studies to research the human anatomy. To get inspiration for the grotesque figures and imagery, he looked up photographs of human remains as well as studying the human decomposition cycle.
